Monitor wake-up issues (yes, even after ALL of the other threads...)

When I try to wake up my MacBook Pro from sleep, the external monitor will display a "no signal - reverting to power-saving mode" message and then go black.

I enter my password "blind" and sometimes the monitor will wake up and sometimes I get the same no signal issue again.

This is NOT a monitor or cable problem. Why do I say this? Because I've tried another (brand new) monitor and cable without any change to the issue.

Potentially irrelevant factoids:

I have a 2019 MacBook Pro with a 16" screen

32 GB of RAM & a 1 TB Apple SSD

All IO is over a Thunderbolt port via an Amazon (Chinese) breakout box

The box is connected to the monitor(s) via HDMI

The current monitor is a 27" LG "Full HD" computer monitor (NOT a repurposed TV)

I've ordered an Amazon Thunderbolt 1.3 to DP 1.4 cable that will bypass the breakout box, but it won't be here for a few more days.

I'm getting REALLY tired of fighting external monitors when the computer wakes up.

Suggestions?

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 11.3

Hi @Jeff_W.

First, thanks kindly for your reply! I appreciate the help - even more so because you seem to know a bit about the question.

  1. My display is correctly detected by my MacBook Pro as a "LG Full HD." I have set this to be the "primary" display and to adjust picture priorities to favor the LG monitor instead of the laptop's screen. I know that this is working because when I had the laptop screen as primary, I had black bars on both sides of the LG display. When I told the MBP to use the LG as primary, I no longer have the black bars.
  2. My Ventura install lacks the "Allow accessories to connect" option that you mention. There is no such option in my Privacy and Security list.
  3. I'm currently using the latest version of Ventura (13.2.1), and the App Store lists no additional versions for my OS on my Intel-based MBP.

Hello CathodeCathay,

You've taken some great steps to resolve the issue that you're having with your monitor not working as expected.

To ensure that we're covering all of our bases, we'd like to provide you with a few additional steps that may be able to assist you:

"1. Detect your display

If your Mac can't detect your display, your display will be dark. Use one or more of these steps to try again to detect your display.

  • Disconnect the display from your Mac, then reconnect it. It might help to turn off the display first.
  • Put your Mac to sleep, then wake it. On Mac laptop computers, you can close the lid for a few seconds, then open the lid again.
  • Choose Apple menu  > System Settings (or System Preferences), then click Displays. Press and hold the Option key to show the Detect Displays button, then click the button.
  • Restart your Mac. If you can't restart your Mac, press and hold its power button for about 10 seconds to turn it off. Then press and release the power button to turn it back on.

2. Allow your display to connect

When connecting a display to a Mac laptop computer with Apple silicon, your Mac might ask you to allow this accessory (your display) to connect. If you don't allow it to connect, your display remains dark. Learn more about allowing accessories to connect

3. Update software

Software can affect display detection, the quality of the image on your display, and the resolutions and refresh rates available to your display.

  • Install the latest macOS updates, which also deliver firmware updates for displays made by Apple.
  • If your display is not made by Apple, make sure that it's using the latest firmware from the manufacturer. Check your display's documentation or the manufacturer's website for details."
