iPhone SE broke after only a few seconds in water

From a company on eBay I bought my iPhone SE 3rd generation. They were selling it as 'New' - opened but never used. I've had it only 2 months when my Grandson wandered into the bathroom and put it down the toilet! It was there for only 5 seconds max. After taking it out it burned up really hot and then powered off, never to come on again. The company on eBay, says it is water damaged and so they can't repair and they will not send me a replacement either. However, the iPhone SE is supposed to be able to withstand water at 1 meter deep for up to 30 minutes! I'm really frustrated as I know without a doubt that it was in the water for a few seconds but I can't prove that. The fact it broke after a few seconds makes me think that before I bought it the seal must have already been broken. Any ideas on this would be very helpful.

iPhone SE, iOS 17

Can you prove the iPhone you purchased was new? How do you know it wasn’t previously tampered with?

New Apple iPhones purchased from Apple or an Apple Authorized Resellers come with a 1 year warranty for defects in labor or parts. However accidental damage is not covered. Apple and third party insurers sell various forms of coverage that includes accidental damage.

If it was sold on eBay, it was not "new". There are no authorized sellers of Apple products on eBay.

The water resistance statistics are based on laboratory testing under controlled circumstances. Water resistance is NOT "waterproof".

Liquid damage is not repairable.

It's toast. You may be able to get an out of warranty replacement from Apple. In the US, that will cost you $299 + tax.

You’re welcome. There are a couple more possibilities. One is a home owners policy. But the deductible may be more than the replacement cost. If you purchased it with a credit card, some cards add insurance as a benefit for being a cardholder. If you pay your cellphone bill with a credit card, some cards provide damage coverage. I got my granddaughter’s iPhone replaced that way. I pay my cellphone bill with a Wells Fargo card that offers the benefit.

Your daughter and grandson were lucky. You were not. It's entirely possible that the phone you bought had been opened, or damaged, or otherwise tampered with. Since it came from an unauthorized source and was not 'new', there's no telling what happened to it before you got hold of it.

"Water resistant" ≠ "waterproof".

It was damaged after only a few seconds because the conditions of its exposure to liquid allowed liquid to penetrate the device. How? We don't know. We are not psychic. It happens. That's exactly why it's called "water resistant" and not "waterproof".

Thank you for responding.

I'm just a bit confused as it really was only seconds down the toilet and yet everywhere I am reading that it should be able to withstand quite a bit longer than a few seconds. My daughter (grandson's Mum) has the exact same phone. It seems to be a thing as my Grandson also put hers down the toilet in the past and her phone was perfectly okay.

Yes, I understand water damage is not repairable but my question is why was it damaged after only a few seconds? To me, it sounds like it must have been opened before and perhaps the seal was already broken, letting water in too easily.

My daughter's phone survived being put in water (same issue - Grandson had put it down the toilet - (must be a thing of his) and it is the exact same phone.

Yes, exactly. This is what I am trying to get to the root of. It was advertised as 'New' and I don't think it was. It wasn't an individual seller, it was an online eBay shop that sells phones. They advertise as 'opened but new and unused'.

I have also just noticed that in my Apple Account it has purchase date as September 2022! This means they have had the phone for 2 years, as my purchase date was September 2024.

Thank you again for your response. Much appreciated.
