Just updated to 18.2. The Mail App is terrible. I just want it to be how it was, I don’t know, the entire time I’ve been in the iOS ecosystem. You know, like 10+ years.

Amazingly, you have that choice already! It doesn’t require an update! And how to do that has been posted in this thread dozens of times! To save you the trouble of reading:
To remove the icons in the list view:
To turn off Categories:
These 2 steps will return the Mail app to the way it previously worked.
I’d like to know how to put it back too. The update for email is total garbage. Hopefully they will give us the option to go back. This list view is no better. If apple wont listen hopefully someone finds a solve to share.

my apologies for "adding to the thread". I assumed the newer posts were in the first pages and older in the higher page #s. After page 3 I thought I was just going farther back, I was wrong. BUT, if I may ask: I have 5 email addresses in my mail app and somehow I removed the categories from 3 of them but they still remain on 2. I'm not exactly sure which setting got those to go away? Thank you to all for the advice to get this mail app back to normal!
All this does is change the appearance. This new update still pulls all unread messages from all my mailboxes and puts them into one giant folded that is a huge cesspool of garbage!? I never opted for this mess!
That isn’t true. List view is not the old way. There are giant icons on the left and the sizing is totally off.

Apple once again tampering with something and making it worse. Probably used a chunk of memory too 😡
I have the same question. I absolutely hate the mail update. Who ever thought that was a good idea must really hate humanity.
This new Apple mail setup looks very similar to Google’s email, which I don’t like either. Why couldn’t Apple just stay with a good thing!
