Scanning an external hard drive for viruses/malware on a new Mac mini

I recently purchased a Mac mini. I have some files from an external hard drive that I'd like to download onto my mini, but I want to make sure the external hard drive and files haven't been corrupted so I don't put my mini at risk. Does my Mac mini already have some kind of software I can use to scan the external hard drive before I download any files? If not, what is the recommended procedure for doing this safely?

The Mac's operating system has its own built in protections, including a "locked" OS which cannot be changed. It is possible to download malware which is annoying but cannot ham the computer. Malware can easily be removed by any one of several available apps. (Some of which are free.) The key is to be careful about which sites you visit and what you download. You should be ok.
