So my friend told me he is going to give me an external hard drive, and I don't really trust him. How do I plug the hard drive without it making automatic things? He knows I have a MacBook so he can put a virus or malware especially for Mac. I just want to plug it in and directly erase it.

What an answer. This will be useful. If you just want to tell me that I should trust every friend I have, no need to answer. And if you just repeat what someone said and admit it, no need to answer again.
Just plug in the drive. Don't open any files on it. Then erase the drive with Disk Utility. It will be fine.
I have to agree with BobTheFisherman. If you don't trust someone how can they be a friend? Friendships are built on trust. Or not.
If you don't trust the friend, then I would avoid anything he gives you.

Plug in the drive and format it using Disk Utility as already said by dialabrain above..
