Mac Mini M4 not seeing scanner connected directly to it

I have a Canon Flatbed Scanner LiDE 210 that my new Mac Mini M4 will not see even though it is connected directly to the mini.

The scanner uses the usb to power it. I have used it with a hub and directly still nothing.

I have used the Apple image capture and the scanner does not show there either.

I thought it had failed so I connected it to my old iMac and it came to life no problem.

So I am at a loss

No driver support from Canon, but as stated the free trial of the paid VueScan Professional will drive this scanner without any Canon software or Canon driver requirement.

I purchased VueScan Professional in 2010 and have been using it ever since without any additional upgrade fees as new versions were released. I receive no benefit from the VueScan vendor for mentioning their product here. It just works. I currently use it with a Canon LIDE 400 scanner that is supported by VueScan Professional and Apple's built-in AirPrint (via USB).

VueScan Professional can perform Optical Character Recognition (OCR) when scanning to PDF, which avoids the need to purchase a PDF editor for this purpose so one can add search capability in PDFs. In October, VueScan added the ability to colorize grayscale pictures during a scan which I just used on a picture from circa 1973 with success.

It is true: Canon doesn't support these scanners anymore. I have a flatbed scanner Cancan 9000F which is (should say was!) a formidable tool for scanning, but with the purchase of a Mac mini M2 this scanner became worthless. No drivers, no software from Canon available so they degraded this scanner into a piece of garbage. Of course I discussed this with Canon, but to no avail. Thanks for the tip to try Vuescan, and I'll surely give it a try.

Are you direct in a usb 3 port or an adapter usb3 to usbC on a usb-C port?

Some manufacturers are suggesting Air Print (although unsure if this can be used for scanning) (anyone?)

Try a different port (just in case). Can you have it detected ? (Try different sequences: shut scanner off, restart machine, launch scanner. Or, launch scanner disconnected then connect it.

Obviously the first step is that it’s being detected.

DWB Thanks for the heads up on this one. Strange how it just started working again. I have always used VueScan and it always worked, then all of a sudden it would not see the scanner, so I kept trying different things and then out of the blue things started working again. Like I said still scratching my head on this one, but at least it's working now. Thanks everyone for your Help.

I am having similar problems with my Canon ImageFormula R40. It worked great with my Mac mini M1 on the previous OS but with my new mini M4Pro on Sequoia the unit wasn't even recognized. I have been using VueScan for my old Canon MG6320 flatbed scanner so I tried it with the R40 and indeed it worked. The R40 scans two sides at once so I'm still trying to figure out how to get that to work but at least it is scanning again. I turned on "duplex feeder" in the settings and it scans both sides but seems to only retain one image in the preview and save. I will keep experimenting. I don't see the R40 listed in the supported scanners on the VueScan website but even a page at a time is better than none!

Thanks for the quick reply! I did recently go for the VueScan maintenance plan to keep it updated so I have the latest and as you mentioned I see the Canon R40 in the list of scanners. I sent a support request about my issue. Interestingly in the pulldown menus to set up the request they don't mention MacOS 15 but so far it seems to be working. I will update here when I get a reply from them.

Ed Hamrick himself replied to my query. The solution is to hit Scan or Scan+ and both scanned sides will be saved. I prefer using the preview button because then you can save the file wherever you want and the Scan button only saves to the default folder but I can work around that. A $350 doorstop has now become a usable product again, thanks VueScan!
