Cannot load driver for Canon ImageFormula R40 scanner on MacBook Air

Purchased a Canon scanner ImageFormula R40 to scan many business documents. At first I had trouble because the Mac kept saying the CaptureOnTouch app was damaged, no matter how many times I replaced it. I called Canon and they also added a Twain app and we got it to work. But even with the IT Canon person on the phone, we could not get the driver to read. The error message says "cannot load driver". My Mac Booker is last year's purchase and the OS is Sonoma 14.7.2 with the M2 2022 chip. I have the Canon scanner USB plugged into my hub because the Mac BookAir does not have any USB ports. Can anyone help? I need to get this working urgently for a current project.

I just got off the phone with Canon support. I am using an M1 Mac Pro laptop running Sequoia 15.2. Despite the date of the latest CaptureOn Touch software being Jan, 2025, they admit it won’t work with Sequoia. I had tried it on Ventura but when that didn’t work I updated my OS in the hope that it would help. No go. What did work, for scanning old photographs for archiving, is VueScan. I was ready to send the machine back, but this is good enough for me for now. The tech rep said that they “hope to get a new driver for the current Mac OS out soon.” I would like to use some of the filing and two-sided scanning that CaptureOn Touch promises.
