iOS 18: AirPods won’t auto restart music after announcing a notification

Since updating to iOS 18 I experience the following issue: My AirPods reduce the volume of my music when announcing a notification (till here the behavior is as expected) but then they pause the music instead of increasing the volume back to normal. So every time I have to manually restart the playback. I Cannot believe that Apple has not fixed this error in one of the last 2 incremental updates of iOS 18. This never happened with any iOS before!

Device: iPhone 14 Pro

iOS: 18.0, 18.0.1 and 18.1

AirPods: 3 and 4 ANC

Possible solutions I tried (but no success):

  • turn on the vocal shortcuts feature and turn it off again
  • turn off the head movement feature
  • restart iPhone

It's a shame that this is the user experience for brand new 200€ headphones (Airpods 4 ANC). Please let me know if anyone knows how to fix this.

I think I found the issue. I had sound recognition enabled and for some reason it pauses media after an announcement is made or after reading a text message. The bug is still present. To fix it, I had to go to

  1. Go to Settings  > Accessibility > Sound Recognition, then turn OFF Sound Recognition.

Once I did that, I would still get the announcement or my texts read but the music would continue playing.

I’m having the same problem, and it’s incredibly frustrating. Every time the notification announcement feature is enabled, it interrupts my music playback. The music completely stops, and I have to manually press play to restart it—sometimes as often as every minute.

Because of this issue, I’ve had to disable the notification announcement feature altogether. Unfortunately, this means I often miss important notifications, which is really disappointing.

I hope Apple can address this problem soon because it’s making the user experience far less seamless than it should be. A fix for this would be amazing and bring back the convenience I’m used to with Apple products.

Update:

I’ve found that the issue is resolved if I deactivate the Sound Recognition feature. With this turned off, music playback works seamlessly again, even with notification announcements enabled.

However, it’s disappointing that such a useful feature like Sound Recognition causes this problem. It’s frustrating that I have to choose between having reliable music playback or using Sound Recognition, as both are important functions. I really hope this gets addressed so both features can work together without conflict.
