New Magic Mouse USB-C Does Not Scroll

I received my new Magic Mouse USB-C model, running 3.1.4. The issue is that it does not scroll up or down when swiping on the surface. I tried it on 2 macbooks. The mouse does not scroll. I can click and point, but not scroll. My old magic mouse scrolls fine.

The USB-C Magic Mouse gestures do NOT work on 14.6.1 and 14.7.1. I tried both versions.

One needs to upgrade to 15.1.

But for people who cannot upgrade this is annoying.

Apple please post a work around for existing users so that older versions of MacOS will recognize the new USB-C Magic mouse gestures.

Is there configuration file one can add?

I've been using my old Apple Pro USB mouse (2000) on my 2017 MacBook Air (Monterey 12.5) since I bought it and was going to treat myself to one of these only to find Apple has UPPED the specs and froze me out. I don't know why the mouse has to have 'specs' that limits which computer I use. Just make the OS do the work of assigning any 'new features'.

Well, this Apple Pro mouse is still working, so Apple just lost another sale.

I have reservation about upgrading to macOS 15 because I was using macOS 15 on a Mac mini and the mouse secondary functions did not work. I upgraded my hardware to a Mac Studio with macOS 14.7.2 and not only does the mouse not have secondary functions such as swipe and scroll, there is no provision for it in system settings.

I also bought a Trackpad with Studio and there are no settings for Trackpad in system settings at all.

There is one solution (can't test it as I have MacOS 15.2) I found ... it is a horrible solution, but if you are stuck with the mouse and can't return it or have an older Mac, you can do this:

To scroll with a new magic mouse if you don't have MacOS 15.1 or newer, you can:

  1. Use the vertical scroll wheel to scroll horizontally by holding down the Shift key on your keyboard1.
  2. Go to System Settings > Mouse and toggle Natural Scrolling on or off to change the mouse's scrolling direction2.
