How to make shape as background to texts in Pages?

In Mac Pages original template, shapes can be placed under the texts. However, if I insert a square as the background, it is always above the texts. I want a solution. Thanks.

How to send shape behind text in Pages? I can't find an option to send shape behind text. When I use move to the backward layer it's still in front of the text. The only option that kind of works is Arrange > Section Layouts > Move Object to Section Layout, but it creates another issue. Every shape that was moved to Section Layout is now multiplied on every page. So the question is, how to send a single shape behind text? It's so simple in Word. Am I missing something?

How to Set Default Markup Settings for MacOS Preview.app? I love that we can easily annotate anything that Preview can open. I use Markup all the time to annotate photos of areas inside and outside our house that we'd like a cleaner or gardener to attend to. Using Google Translate, I put notes in Spanish for them, and they appreciate it. 1000 words and all. However, it seems that every time I do this, the background of the text box is transparent when I need it to be opaque white. The same thing seems to happen to arrows when I need to use one. They keep defaulting to transparent. When you're annotating a lot of photos and PDFs, having to click crazily each time to change the default settings feels onerous. I'd also love to set my default for Preview to have the Markup setting open on all docs. Is that possible? Seems like there should be some way to change the default settings. Does anyone know if that's possible, or there's a hack that might? Or is there another 3rd party MacOS app that would do this just as easily (Adobe feels unnecessarily complex) and allow me to set these defaults? Selecting Back Layers/Objects In Pages? I have a text object that is sitting on a shape object, for example. The text is in front of the shape, I want to select the shape, but Pages only allows me to select the text layer. No combination of any keys I've tried allows me to select through layers in Pages. This is driving me mad. The only way to select that back object is to move the text object, then select and modify, and then move that text layer back. What a waste of time and formatting. What am I doing wrong? Someone has solved this problem, for sure!

There is a notion of Section Layouts whether in the Pages word-processing or page layout mode. One image (or shape) can be placed in the background below the text and other objects on each page of a section, or as required, the entire document beyond the first section where the section layout resides.

In your example image, you could select that orange square, change its location, size, opacity, and then Arrange menu > Section Layouts > Move Objects to Section Layout. That places it below everything just like a watermark.
