I upgraded my iPhone 12 Pro to a 16 Pro, and the new phone will not connect to my 2018 Mazda CX-5 with CarPlay. When I plug it in, it charges but makes no sign of connecting.

If you go to settings,screen time, then content and privacy restrictions, turn it on then allow everything. Does that fix it ?

Your 16 does not use a lightning cable, that was 14 and older phones. You are using a USB-C cable. The EU forced Apple's hand in changing from lightning to C.
I purchased an Anker cable that was recommended in this post and it fixed the problem. The cable charges and does data transfer.
Was that with Bluetooth CarPlay or USB-A to USB-C carplay
What worked for me my 16 and 2019 Audi was to go into WiFi settings on phone, connect to the car wifi and turn on connect automatically.
my 16e wont connect to carplay either. i have no yet identified a way to make it work.
wish i stuck with my $200 android, never had any issues.
i dont see that option on my 16e. ive looked in every option in settings.
Can you put the step by step please because I can’t find car play under privacy, it’s not coming up in mine
