Troubleshooting Stalled: Mac Boot:

I. Verify your Drive: Repair your Disk in Disk Utility

Go Here: If your Mac Starts Up to an Apple Logo or Progress Bar - Apple Support

See if your Hard drive is Failing:

  1. Boot: into Recovery Mode (Hold Down: [command + R] upon boot)
  2. Select: Disk Utility
  3. Select: the Drive
  4. Click: First Aid button

II. Reset your SMC and your NVRAM:

Sometimes changes are made to the system and then settings (i.e. for macOS) become manipulated, in the technically. So, reset both on your Mac. See if it now works as intended. It might take up to 3 tries to get this successfully go through. (Applies to Intel-Based Macs Only)

III. Boot into Safe Mode:

Boot into Safe Mode (Hold down the Shift key upon boot). See if this still occurs. In Safe Mode, items open by default and login items do not open after login, with all caches are set aside. See if it then works. Then, restart the Mac, and log in to the same user as you are in now. See if it now works. Logging into Safe Mode may fix a few things.

IV. Rid of Running Items:

Boot into Safe Mode, and rid of whatever is not needed as a Login Item

A. First check. the list of Login Items:

  1. Go To: System Preferences
  2. Select: Users & Groups
  3. Click: This user name
  4. Click: Login Items
  5. Select: Uneeded items.
  6. Click: “-“ button

B. Then, Check Force Quit:

See if an application is not responding. If that is the case, Force Quit it.

  1. Go To: Apple Menu
  2. Select: Force Quit...
  3. Select: An Item Ending in: “Not Responding
  4. Click: Force Quit button

"i’ve tried every reset, it takes me back to the same screen when i power it on. it makes the sound as if it’s going to come on but it doesn’t fully load the apple sign"

So, do you get the boot chime?

Mirror the Screen to this External Display:

While booting up, mirror the screen, and you just may see a the Apple logo and be able to proceed from there.

  • Without Touchbar: Hold Down [command + F1]
  • With Touchbar: Hold Down: [command + dull screen]

Getting the Connection:

If you have no HDMI port, then, this would be the adapter to use: USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter - Apple

Thank you for the followup reply.

Logging into your Mac:

Was this in an instant, or did you do something to get it to power on.

Try the Following:

A. Mirror the Screen to this External Display:

While booting up, mirror the screen, and then see if you can proceed from there with a successful login, using the internal keyboard and trackpad, or an external keyboard and mouse.

  • Without Touchbar: Hold Down [command + F1]
  • With Touchbar: Hold Down: [command + dull screen]

B. Try Safe Mode:

In Safe Mode, login items do not run, and corrupt system files(i.e. caches) are intentionally reset as a way to fix issues

  1. Boot: in to Safe Mode: [Hold Down: shift key upon boot].
  2. Log in: as same user.
  3. Wait: 30 seconds
  4. Restart; your Mac
  5. Log in: as same user

C. See if your Hard drive is Failing:

What to Try:

  1. Verify your Drive: Repair your Disk in Disk Utility - Apple Support
  2. Go Here: If your Mac Starts Up to an Apple Logo or Progress Bar - Apple Support
  3. Perform the following in Recovery Mode:

D. Remove Login Items:

While in Safe Mode, remove all of your Login Items, and then restart the Mac.  Go Here: Change Users & Groups Login Items Preferences on Mac - Apple Support
