Logic i/o plugin doesn't function as expected

I've been having a rather frustrating issue for the past several weeks and am hoping someone on this forum can help. I cannot get my I/O plugin to function as expected and at this point think it is something wrong with my software perhaps?

My signal chain is: Mac Studio M2 Ultra Ventura 13.5 > Logic Pro 11.0.1 > (audio interface) Presonus HD8 outputs 3/4 > (outboard gear) Rupert Neve Master Bus > Presonus HD8 inputs 3/4.

The Presonus HD8 outputs 1/2 are to my monitors where I can hear everything as expected. The Presonus user manual says outputs 3/4 on the HD8 can be used to send signal to outboard gear for hybrid processing.

Within Logic: On any track (bus, instrument, midi - anything) I insert the I/O plugin I set the Out to 3/4 (which I assume is the outputs on my interface 3/4, and the input on the I/O I set to 3/4 (which I assume they mean the inputs on the interface) I don't know if they need to be opposite like with midi or not - so perhaps thats a question also?

I hit the PING button to determine the sample latency and I hear a tick as expected but at no point (regardless of what outboard gear I've tried) has there ever been a sample offset given. It always stays at 0 samples. That doesn't seem normal to me.

Further, I can turn any knob on my outboard gear and there are no observable changes to the audio. I've used some wild FX settings on my guitar pedals to test it and I've never been able to hear any change to the audio track.

Is there any insight as to what the issue might be? I've seen every YouTube video on the topic and they all plug in and start mixing right away and so it's really frustrating to keep getting this issue. I've contacted apple pro support and they said they don't provide technical support for these custom setups. But the only custom thing I'm trying to do is use the I/O plugin in its most basic way.

I'm grateful for any assistance.

Some afterthoughts: Can I/O only be used on audio tracks and not midi or Bus tracks?

POSSIBLE SOLUTION:

I wanted to touch back in with the community and post a possible solution that I think I've found. This applies specifically to the issues I was having with my Presonus HD8 interface but I think I've found a possible work around. I'll post it here and if there are any questions let me know.

The Presonus HD8 interface needs to be set to "bypass mixer" from the settings window. This seems to route the audio out of any selected output within Logic Pro X as anyone would expect.

COMPUTER:

Finder  - Applications - Audio Midi Setup - Quantum HD8 - Configure Speakers -  (Set Outs to Main Left/Right).

LOGIC:

  1. Settings - Audio - I/O Assignments - (Set to Main Left/RIght)
  2. Create an audio track (I used a midi track with EZ Drummer 3 as an test)
  3. Audio FX - Utility - I/O Plugin - Set output 3/4 - Set input to whatever channel you're recording into
  4. Ping for latency offset

At this point you should be able to monitor and hear your affected sound through your outboard gear and make adjustments as desired.

To track that effect:

  1. Send track you want to record to Bus @ unity gain (hold option + mouse click on bus rotary fader)
  2. Create another audio track - set input to same bus you just sent your track to - set that output to main left/right.
  3. Record.

Any questions please let me know. This took hours of finagling so I totally get it being a really frusterating but I am so relieved I can finally track with my outboard gear.

Cheers!

Sorry to hear your trouble. Before opting for an RME USB interface I briefly tried a Presonus Thunderbolt interface for the presumed near-zero latency, which didn't work at all, but a) considering most PC users have no problems here and Mac Silicon users have many I'm only partly blaming Presonus for their bad drivers and b) that doesn't seem to be your problem here

Quote: "I've seen every YouTube video on the topic and they all plug in and start mixing right away" - As a general rule, don't believe YouTubers. These people are all about the clicks, and apart from selectively tearing down very specific companies in very specific instances, these people never really notice or criticise the millions of bugs in the products they talk about. It's the same with sports watches by a well known US company. They all basically are scared of repercussions and not being in the inner circle anymore.

Since switching to Apple Silicon I have found a plethora of bugs on a) the hardware integration level b) the operating system level and c) the Logic Pro level. It just took a few days to find them. They are reproducible. No one really cares. Not one Youtuber mentions them. It's absurd. And don't get me started about internet forums, much the same, as the people who realise their problems are not being solved simply turn away and a) try to find workarounds or b) change their setup soft- and / or hardware-wise.

Thanks for the response. It was only that the YouTubers demonstrated how the basic routing was configured to their outboard gear and then it worked perfectly fine for them and then how I noticed it wasn't behaving the same way for me. I'm going to try a couple other DAWS and see if I still get the same issue. Hopefully that will help me hone in on the issue.
