Current storage size of Messages on watch is not in sync with Phone

Received a replacement watch (SE 2nd gen) from Apple. Unpaired old one, paired new one and during setup process, used the "restore from backup" option. A few days later received a notification that my watch was out of storage space. Cleared a few apps off and then dug into storage. While viewing storage line items, messages took up the most space but the storage value was shown incorrectly: Phone was 3GB while watch showed 6GB. A day after I noticed this, phone still showed 3GB+ while watch is now showing 18GB+. Haven't received any "out of storage" notifications on the watch but very strange behavior and watch is near storage limit.

I've tried the "Reset Sync Data" option, rebooting watch and phone, nothing has worked yet.
