With respect to this: Apple Intelligence Preview - Apple

I suspect that the features will be there – in phones and versions of iOS that support them – but that you will not be forced to use them.

There will be many people who do use them, so I don't think that by boycotting them yourself, you'll be able to avoid the impact that these features (and others like them) will have on society.

I don’t want Apple AI on my phone, the UP phone is looking like my next alternative. I have stopped updating at iOS 17. If they don’t fix it so we can opt out I’m getting unplugged phone (UP put) next.

There are 6 pages in this thread. And on just about every page of this thread, someone pops in, who didn't read past the first post, which if you had, you'd already know you have to OPT-IN to get Apple Intelligence on your iPhone. So don't EVER opt-in and you won't ever have it. And your phone already uses Artificial Intelligence as it is. Do you use Siri, ever? It uses Artificial Intelligence. Or have you turned Siri off on your phone completely? Do you take photos with your phone? If you do, it uses computational photography, which is guess what? Artificial Intelligence.

As this is a user to user only forum, we don't honestly care what your next smart phone will be. But if you think ANY smart phone won't have Artificial Intelligence built in, think again. I'm sure there are non-smart flip phones you can buy at a discount store, which may be a better alternative for you.

Ps: If you have stopped updating at iOS 17, there's a good chance you don't even own an iPhone which is capable of running Apple Intelligence anyway. To get Apple Intelligence, you'd have to own an iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max to begin with.

To disable Apple Intelligence on your iPhone, you can turn off features related to Siri and other predictive services that rely on machine learning. First, go to Settings > Siri & Search and disable options like Listen for "Hey Siri,"Press Side Button for Siri, and Suggestions in Search. Additionally, you can limit certain app tracking and personal data usage by navigating to Settings > Privacy & Security and managing app permissions or adjusting settings for Location Services and Analytics & Improvements.

To turn off Apple Intelligence, you go to Settings>Apple Intelligence & Siri>Apple Intelligence and set it to off.

Did you bother to read past the first post? Clearly you did NOT. Nothing is being forced on you. You HAVE to opt-in if you want AI. Don't opt-in and you won't have it. Reading through a thread, where this has been said on every page of the thread, would have prevented you from wasting your time posting.

To be clear, nothing is being forced on you. And no, you can't get a refund at all. If Artificial Intelligence is troubling to you, you may want to consider a not-smart flip phone. All major platform cell manufactures have incorporated AI into their phones. And your current iPhone has had some bits of Artificial Intelligence for some time. Have you ever asked Siri a question? Yep, that's Artificial Intelligence. Do you take pictures on your phone? Your phone uses computational photography and guess what? That's Artificial Intelligence.

AI in the form of Machine Learning has been present on iPhone for quite some time.

Apple Intelligence support is opt-in, and requires iPhone 15 Pro, Pro Max, or iPhone 16.

Given the many replies with this info throughout this thread, maybe Apple Intelligence can help those skimming this thread with a summary of this thread?

Given that you now know Apple Intelligence is not being forced on you and you have to actually opt-in to use it, you can still return the device within 14 days in most regions or you can privately sell it as well. I must ask how you determined it was being forced on you and you were required to use it. Sounds like something you would find on TikTok or a Facebook post. Please enlighten us and let us know what phone you are going to use now.

For those who want to move to a different phone because of the limited AI features introduced in iOS 18, may I suggest the AT&T model. It plugs into the phone jack of your home and no cellular plan is needed. That may be your only option. If you think that you will find a Google or Samsung, or any Android phone without AI, you would be very wrong.

You will find that Apple has been the only manufacturer taking a responsible approach to AI, by not only allowing you to opt-in for the feature, but protecting your private information if you do choose to opt-in. You are not seeing any other company that has put as much effort into on-device processing and Private Cloud Computing when using any external source.

Why do they force things we do not want.

Nothing is being forced on you. AI is not even installed unless you request it. How is that “forcing” something on you that don’t want? Please explain. You simply don't know what you are talking about and it’s tiring to read posts by users who have no clue, didn't bother to read previous posts, and simply knee-jerk complain.

I’m betting you won't respond back either.

You’ll want to acquire a feature phone, and sell your Apple gear.

That’s the only way to avoid AI, ML, and LLM, and that’s not even entirely certain.

Various AI, ML, and LLM features have been around for a while, and iPhone makes particular use of the capabilities provided by these algorithms. Scanning text from images, lifting the subject of photos, identifying people and pets, voice to text, and other existing capabilities of iPhone are all based on what you want removed.

As for the Apple Intelligence features recently being marketed, that is entirely opt-in.

Alternatively, AI could have summarized an answer from the previous replies in the thread here too, and probably also avoided your incorrect assumption about the forum participants: we’re not folks that work for Apple, and have no means to remove a feature provided by Apple. Apple may or may not read postings around here, and seldom replies, as well.

As for machine learning (ML), that’s already in endemic use, and has been for some time.

Underlying and utilitarian AI for facial recognition, sound and image enhancement, etc. are fine. When AI injects moral or political bias or has access to personal information to which some programmer can gain backdoor access despite Apple policy, I draw the line. Chat GPT was found notably biased when it first rolled out. I just now posed some test questions to it and it appears it has been made more balanced than when it first appeared. None the less, I am convinced that the programmer of AI can produce either biased or invasive results and needs evaluation, periodically.

AI is unnecessary for that, between politics, psyops, propaganda, stan-baiting, thinkfluencers, astroturfing, push-polling, trolling, copyright infringement, ubiquitous advertising, and increasingly-invasive tracking and targeted advertising, welcome to humanity with planetary-scale communications.

AI certainly helps to automate and to reduce the costs of running troll farms and content farms, sure.

Apple must follow laws. Thus laws like CCPA as well as GDPR. Thus, Apple will have a way to allow users to disable it. They will give us a way to turn it off. There are laws in place to protect us. Don’t stress it. It will be a simple toggle button in the settings area. No big deal people that want it will get it and people that don’t won’t be bothered with it. Yep thank god for CCPA

If you are talking specifically about accessing third party models such as ChatGPT, Apple already demonstrated that each request must be specifically authorized by you. No need for a switch, you simply don't authorize it or make a request. Machine Learning has been used for several years on your device and you may not have even known it. You have seen this in features such as:

  • Face Detection
  • Object Detection
  • Siri Voice Recognition
  • Siri Suggestions
  • Predictive Typing
