With respect to this: Apple Intelligence Preview - Apple

I suspect that the features will be there – in phones and versions of iOS that support them – but that you will not be forced to use them.

There will be many people who do use them, so I don't think that by boycotting them yourself, you'll be able to avoid the impact that these features (and others like them) will have on society.

Yea. Like this “current” technology really has our best interests in mind.

Apple certainly wants to continue to profit from device sales and subscriptions, certainly.

But again, look at what Apple specifically writes about privacy.

As for “Artificial Intelligence” in the form of machine learning (ML), that’s already in endemic usage, including in the camera image processing, photo facial and critter and text recognition, and in other components.

As for “Artificial Intelligence” in the form of large language models (LLM), that’s helpful to an extent and word salad to an extent. Apple has indicated they’re not sending user data off device to Apple without prior user permission, and not sending user data to third-party large language models without prior user permission, and they’re constraining that off-device processing as they themselves don’t want to be holding this user data in an accessible fashion.

Related reading from Apple:

Put differently, once the Apple Intelligence features are available and can be evaluated and considered by us, look at what is being offered, at what features and privacy details are implemented, and then decide whether you will use it, or ignore it, or will migrate to a feature phone, or to Pine Phone, Pine Phone Pro or some other alternative with capabilities and an operating system better aligning with your requirements and preferences, or whatever else here makes the most sense for you.

Realize too that AI in the form of machine learning is already in widespread use within Apple devices.

Apple Intelligence is NOT intrusive. Unlike other LLM AI’s, Apple’s actually runs on your phone. But you can still turn it off if you don’t want to use it.

You might find this enlightening:

While others rush AI to market, Apple is taking its time. WSJ’s Joanna Stern talks with the company’s head of software Craig Federighi about the future of Siri, privacy, funny notification summaries and Apple’s slower approach.

Maybe I’m late to the party, however, I no longer trust Apple and theirupdates that turn on everything that I specifically turned off… I don’t want to store your content that i do t want to save and pay for it!

And if you no longer trust Apple then consider changing to Android where you will almost never get updates for anything, not even security issues.

Underlying and utilitarian AI for facial recognition, sound and image enhancement, etc. are fine. When AI injects moral or political bias or has access to personal information to which some programmer can gain backdoor access despite Apple policy, I draw the line. Chat GPT was found notably biased when it first rolled out. I just now posed some test questions to it and it appears it has been made more balanced than when it first appeared. None the less, I am convinced that the programmer of AI can produce either biased or invasive results and needs evaluation, periodically.

if it can not be disabled, I’m keeping my 13 forever and I’m not allowing updates. This just made my any decision about replacing my PC and tablet much easier.

iPhone 13 is incapable of Apple Intelligence, though is already running ML for various features including embedded text recognition, and lifting the foreground subject from photos, among other features.

On iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and later, models which do support Apple Intelligence, it can be disabled.

You have no choice in the matter. You cannot remove it, you can only choose to not use it. And you will not be able to avoid it either as AI is already dominating the online world and has been for years now. And if you consider switching to a different manufacturer you will be sorely disappointed as every phone, every computer, every mobile device will have it as well. Learn to live with it or continue to be angry. Your choice.

Oh, and if you have any iPhone earlier than the iPhone 15 Pro you don’t have to worry at all. AI is not supported on any model before the iPhone 15 Pro. Simply keep your current phone until it is no longer functioning, then simply go on without a phone ever again.

For the record, you can have an AI capable iPhone running iOS 17. Taken today:

The post you are replying to is from May 2024, back when iOS 17 was current.

Hopefully, they’ve gotten their answer in the ensuing replies.

While your particular iPhone 15 Pro Max hardware is capable of Apple Intelligence, iOS 17 is not.

Apple Intelligence is opt-in, and requires iOS 18. It is not available on iOS 17.

Other machine-learning-based features are present in various iOS versions, including in iOS 18 and iOS 17.

And there is no downgrade from iOS 18 to iOS 17.

I feel the same way, I’m done with my writing constantly getting underlined. It’s distracting and unnecessary, I can find no setting to turn it off, I write in 3 different languages and I get frustrated trough the core.

If the existing Apple spelling and grammer tools don’t work the way you want and can’t be reonfigured, send your feedback to Apple: Product Feedback - Apple

As another potential option here, writing-focused alternatives such as Scrivener might work for your particular needs.

I want to turn off the annoying "cutting out objects" from photos because I just want to look at photos.

Lifting the subject from a photo is a feature of iOS 16, and is related to Visual Lookup, and available on certain devices, and requires touching and holding on the subject to trigger it.

Here is how to: Lift a subject from the photo or video background on iPhone - Apple Support

I am aware of no means to disable or avoid this lifting, or the related Visual Lookup, short of not pressing and holding on the subject.

You can send Apple your feedback about this: Product Feedback - Apple

I wish there was a way to default all apps with AI (Apple Intelligence) OFF when I turn on AI on my iPhone. I only want a couple of apps to use AI (e.g., Pages), but I have to go through a gazillion apps one by one(!) to turn AI OFF. Ahhhhhh

Keep the “main” Apple Intelligence switch off, but the machine learning is separate and little (or none?) of that has switches.

As for your feedback, whether that’s a control to toggle all on or all off, or better doc, or whatever, send that to Apple here: Product Feedback - Apple

Where is Apple response to this persistant and legitimate desire of their customers to be able to control AI use on their phone?

What specifically are you talking about:

  • Face ID
  • Touch ID
  • Siri Suggestions
  • Detecting Faces in Photos
  • Detecting Objects in Photos (animals, plants, etc)
  • Map suggestions
  • Auto Correct when typing
  • Copying Objects from Photos
  • Voice Recognition

These are all forms of Artificial Intelligence. If you are specifically talking about Apple Intelligence, then you should know it hasn't even been released yet. In Apple's preview of the service where requests are made to services such as ChatGPT, you have to specifically allow each request, so there is nothing to shut off there. You just don't allow it in the first place.

But I think a lot of the fuss about them has to do with other things that manifest as people being afraid of AI taking their roles, but I also recognize the worry over stuff like privacy: I just really, really wish (and this is pretty par for the course with regards to Apple’s resistance to user customization,) that it was something I could actually turn off: as of now, it looks like it’s now constantly in the right-click menu, pestering and begging me like a child. Irritates me, but I feel sort of resigned. This is the way AI’s gonna be used, and it’s not something endemic to Apple. But the way it slots in now is pretty aggravating, constantly being shoved down your throat.

You have misinformation. AI is ALWAYS off by default. If you want to use it you must turn it on and download the AI feature and database. And you can turn it on or off at will.
