How can I fix the issue of desktop not recognizing iPod Nano 6 during restoration?

i have an old ipod nano 6 that needs to be restored, but when i plug it into my desktop (desktop-vpd2f41) itunes freezes up, and the desktop only recognizes it when i unplug it. also the ipod says “do not disconnect” on the screen.
