Apple Pencil (Gen 2) not working

My Apple pencil was working fine for a few months. At some point, I did not use the pencil for weeks and I did not let it charge. Eventually, I charged the pencil and tried to start using it but it simply stopped working. It no longer pairs with my iPad. When I connect it to the charger on the iPad, the Apple Pencil toast message appears but that is it. It does not work. I have tried everything to get it to reconnect.

Do I just have to buy a new pencil?

I have 2 Apple Pencil 2nd Gen and they both just stopped working. I have an extensive technical background and I tried multiple troubleshooting steps that lead me to believe that it is an iPad related issue - possibly an OS update version?

Trouble Shooting Steps:

  1. ”Forget Device” then re-dock/re-sync
  2. Updated OS to latest version 17.3.1
    1. Forget Device then re-dock and re-sync
  3. Hard Shut down (UP/DWN Volume, Hold Lock until reboot)
    1. Forget Device re-dock and re-sync
  4. Took apart the Otter box cover/screen protector to make sure there wasn’t something interfering with the touch screen - touch screen with finger works
  5. Took apart both Apple Pencil tips and ensured they are screwed in securely

*Note:

  • Tried this with both pencils and always results in the same thing
  • Both Pencils show that they are docked - they both flash an island notification of “Apple Pencil” and then shows an Island notification on the battery % - however it doesn’t work.
  • Bluetooth settings says that the pencil is “Connected”

Specs:

  • iPad Pro (12.9-inch) (5th generation) version 17.3.1
  • Pencils (A2051)
