Updated OS and now battery dies extremely fast, while computer is closed

I recently updated my Macbook Pro to Sonoma 14.3 and now it dies extremely fast. For context I used to charge it about once a week or so, and now it wont last 12 hours. Its dying that fast even when the computer is closed and no programs open??? I have checked the battery, and it is fine. Tried a few other troubleshooting things as well (turning off bluetooth, not allowing checking for updates while sleeping, etc.) but nothing has made a difference.

Anyone else have this issue??

Grant, it is a possibility that all Apple users aren’t tech geeks….. my question was framed with the exact problem that I am having. And having already exhausted all other searches and possible fixes I could find, I finally resorted to posting here. Thankfully there are some people who are actually helpful on here like vmrx, and don’t attempt to belittle someone searching for help. After this and working with apple support, they still don’t have a fix for my issue. So if you have any suggestions that are actually helpful, feel free to post here. Otherwise feel free to assist someone else.

My purely technical response above was intended to ENLARGE on that, and remind Readers that Apple does not use this rather indirect method of Forum Postings ALONE as a basis for Engineering investigations.

The forums are really good for helping users solve SOME issues. I have 125,000 points awarded by users who thought so.

But if no joy from forum advice, Apple does NOT take up your forum posting as a Bug Report, and engineering resources are ONLY applied to formal bug reports.

Complete Problem Resolution requires that you work with Official Apple Support Directly. If they cannot solve the issue out-of-hand, resolution requires that you assert yourself and ask for a Technical Specialist to contact you, or create a Bug Report on your behalf, or add you to an existing Bug Report.

Hey vmrx,

I ran the terminal code, and it certainly appears as though something is preventing sleep. It is a large file, so I copied a section from when my computer would have been closed. Let me know what you can figure out.

Hey thedangercometh,

I wanted to let you know that I reinstalled the OS yesterday, and that seems to have corrected my battery drain issue. Depending on which Mac your students have, there is a different process for restarting in recovery mode. Here is a link for the different processes. How to reinstall macOS - Apple Support

macOS may be doing something useful in the background OR it may be some unintended activity (perhaps due to a bug) of macOS.

Please see the Battery section in System Preferences to check whether the battery charge drops only in Sleep, only when awake or both.

Please also run the following command in Terminal to check sleep logs:

pmset -g log

and post it here.

It will show any unusual activity in Sleep mode that may use the battery charge.

Yes, this certainly looks abnormal when macOS goes to the Sleep mode and then wakes (Darkwakes) every 15 seconds with:

DarkWake from Standby [CDN] : due to EC.ACDetach/Maintenance

That repeated sleep/wake pattern seems to be the reason for the quick discharge of the battery.

This behavior certainly looks like a bug (error) in macOS and so it should be investigated and resolved by Apple. I recommend to contact Apple support and show them the log you have collected. It looks abnormal and they should be able to recognize that, identify the root cause and fix it.

I have two affected laptops. My children in separate classes experienced same issue separately today with their MacBooks, essentially dying, despite a full charge the night before. The battery health indicator does not match what they

experienced (90-100% throughout the day. Please suggest most appropriate next step to report / troubleshoot further.

Hey thedangercometh,

Unfortunately I do not have a solution for you. I spoke with Apple Support, and the person I spoke with was unaware of the issue. Then after researching, was unable to provide me with a fix.... Suggested a couple of things to try, so far no success. I am going to try backing up the computer, and then reinstall the operating system. He said it seems like some people have had success with that?? If you come across anything let me know!

Hey Grant Bennett-Adler,

I apologize for misreading your intended post, and thank you for clarifying! I was already frustrated with my computer situation.... I did reach out to Apple, and unfortunately they were no help in this matter. Suggested a reboot of some kind while holding down option, shift, and "R" I believe. Did that while on the phone, and did not correct the issue. Other possible solution they suggested was to reinstall the OS, but he said that only seems to work a small percentage of the time. He had never heard of this issue, so was resulting to scouring the forums for solutions.

To continue my computer issues, I have now noticed it is starting to run slower, and have now noticed that my computers clock is off sometimes..... Was 32 minutes slow earlier today, but after it went to sleep it caught back up?

consider the possibility that your Mac did NOT go to sleep on cue.

next time, instead of closing the lid, choose "Sleep" off the Apple menu and just watch for a while.
