MacBook "filter" failed error when printing PDF

I have a new M3 MacBook Pro, running macOS Sonoma 14.2.1. While printing PDF an error occurs "stoped - 'filter' - failed". This happens with both a networked printer at my office and my Canon MF6540 printer at home (so it's not a printer driver issue). Office documents (Word, PPT) print fine. It's only PDF that fails.

This info from Canon solved the problem. The last step talks about "at the top". That means to enter the printer model number in the search field at the top of that web page.
