When I log off my desktop on my IMac 24 inch, it will not go to sleep mode when I select sleep, or it takes awhile to go to sleep. How do I fix it so it will go to sleep when I ask it to?

Computer Sleep does not function properly in the latest macOS versions.
Turn on "Prevent automatic sleeping when display is off" and only allow the display to turn off.
Then shut down... for long periods of none use.
FWIW if you are truly interested in what might be preventing Computer Sleep, open your Mac's Activity Monitor, click on the Energy tab, click on the Preventing Sleep Column, look to see what Process is or what Processes are preventing computer sleep.

I have a older 2011 iMac with a similar issue. it does not go to sleep at all. I got it a few days ago at a garage sale and tried to sleep it using the power button, apple logo, etc. I accidentally left a movie running on it at night and I woke up to the screensaver still on and running.
Have you run Disk Utility's Disk First Aid on all connected drives?
In Disk Utility>View, select Show all Devices, highlight the top left entry.
Run Disk First Aid on all items in the left panel, from top down.
Are you running any VPN, Anti-Virus, or Cleaning apps?
We need to see what all is running, a report from this will not display any personal info...

Sleep is unnecessary and should be disabled. Shut for long absences/idle overnights (i.e. do not manual-sleep), and for regular operation, use the settings exactly as shown here Wake up a remote Mac mini - Apple Community, should fix.
Sleep on a Mac is not wise to use. Why, in short it’s not a reliable feature.
Great. This worked for me. Whatsapp for some reason prevents sleep.
