Using the volume slider on my iMac with a stereo pair of HomePods - moving the volume slider up makes the volume jump to loud and moving it to less volume moves it to too low, and the movement is inconsistent to volume. It's driving me mad! I've reinstalled both HomePods and paired them, a number of times, but the problem still exists.

I’m having similar issues when playing from Apple TV box. I use my other HomePods on my Mac. Sometimes it looks like they’re playing but I hear nothing. The volume defaults to zero.
I don’t really know what we can do that we haven’t already tried. Hopefully they can address a fix in a future software update. I would suggest submitting feedback to make Apple aware: Feedback - HomePod - Apple. They do read all feedback but won’t reply back to you.
Have you restarted the Mac? Which model of HomePods are these The OG, Mini or 2nd gen? I have issues with volume control on the latter.
Second Gen HomePods. Have reset both of the stereo pair and restarted my iMac on numerous occasions.
