iWatch receiving text messages but iPhone is not

While at home on WiFi, my iWatch receives text messages but my iPhone 12 does not. How can this happen and how can I correct this. My iPhone and iWatch are both updated to the current iPhone IOS 17.1.2 and iWatch OS 10.1.1.
