I am trying to delete old ios files - back ups of old iphones from a few years ago to free up hard disk space. I have highlighted the files individually as well as a group and clicked on delete...nothing happens - the files are still present.
Suggestions?

Make sure that you are logged into your Admin Account.
If that doesn't help, try starting up the iMac in Safe Mode and see if you can move the files to the Trash.

What happens if you Control (right) click on the File and select Move to Trash?
Then Empty the Trash to recover the Disk Space?
