How can I reduce the huge amount of system memory being used by photolibraryd

On my 2021 MacBook Pro running Sonoma 14.1.1, I've been getting messages like the attached saying my "System has run out of application memory". when this happens the Finder runs very sluggishly and other applications are affected. My otherwise reliable MacBook Pro acts like it's 10 years old and has severe dementia.

Yesterday, Apple phone support helped teach me how to use the Activity Monitor app to see exactly which processes are using the most memory. By far the largest was photolibraryd - but its use fluctuated wildly from 50+ GB down to not even there at all. I do not take that many photos so do not understand the need for this process running so frequently and only with such a huge (though bizarrely fluctuating) bite of application memory.

Are there settings I can use to prevent photolibraryd from running my MacBook Pro off the rails?
