Can't clear MacOS Safari history

The "Clear History" menu item is grayed out and can't be selected. When "Show All History", the "Clear History" icon icon black but does nothing when clicked. What's the trick to get Apple software to work as developed?

Sonoma 14.1 on MacBook Air M1.

When I click on the grey button, nothing happens. Additionally, when I went to clear the cache, the buttons are solid black, but when I click on it, nothings happens. The entire list of 1600 wen site items is still there. I tried to simply execute one deletion, but same result. My machine says it is up to date on software (Big Sur 11.7.1 Safari is Version 16.1 (16614.2.9.1.13, 16614)). Not sure when this happened. It is more than 3 months ago. I thought if the updates were implemented, the functionality would return. It has not.

Delete History How do I delete history on safari iMac. It's always worked until today. When I highlight the selected history item and hit delete on the keyboard, nothing happens. I have tried all of the following fixes, but nothing works: Restart your Mac from the Apple () menu then Restart. Try deleting the same history again. Check for any extensions that might access history: Get extensions to customize Safari on Mac Start the Mac in safe mode and try removing the history there: How to use safe mode on your Mac Use Malwarebytes to scan for any items: Malwarebytes Anyone else having the same problem or have any answers?

No history on Safari drop-down menu displayed The only way to view my Safari search history is to select "all History" in the drop down window. This opens another full window with all the history, as does adding the search icon to the safari toolbar. I have to either select something, or manually close the window. I don't know how to get the search history in the safari history drop down menu, which was so much faster. The problem is intermittent. Sometimes it shows up...sometimes it does not. The problem is with Monterey on my Mac Studio. Has been present through several versions of MacOS at this point. Menu looks like this:
