clearing history, cache

The functions of clearing history for web sites is not available as the button to execute this function is grey as opposed to solid black. When I click on the grey button, nothing happens.

Additionally, when I went to clear the cache, the buttons are solid black, but when I click on it, nothings happens. The entire list of 1600 wen site items is still there. I tried to simply execute one deletion, but same result.

My machine says it is up to date on software (Big Sur 11.7.1 Safari is Version 16.1 (16614.2.9.1.13, 16614)).

Not sure when this happened. It is more than 3 months ago. I thought if the updates were implemented, the functionality would return. It has not.

You're welcome jacqpelle. We're glad we could help. We apologize for using the incorrect setting names. These are new in macOS Ventura. We’ll make sure to pass this along.

Feel free to reach back out if you have any further questions or issues with an Apple device or service.

Have an excellent day!

Hey jacqpelle,

We understand you're unable to clear history on your Mac in Safari.

This can occur if there are restrictions enabled. We'd suggest checking to see if that's the case here. The following steps to enable (as well as show you where to disable) content and privacy restrictions on Mac are outlined here:

On your Mac, do one of the following:
• If you’re using Family Sharing: Log in to your Mac user account, then make sure you’re signed in with your Apple ID.
• If you aren’t using Family Sharing: Log in to a family member’s Mac user account.
1. Choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Screen Time  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
2. If you’re using Family Sharing, click the Family Member pop-up menu on the right, then choose a family member.
3. Click Content & Privacy, then turn it on if it’s not on already.
4. To restrict web content, click Content Restrictions, then turn options on or off. See Change Content Restrictions settings in Screen Time.
5. To restrict movies, TV shows, and app purchases, click Store Restrictions, then turn options on or off. See Change Store Restrictions settings in Screen Time.
6. To restrict apps, click App Restrictions, then turn options on or off. See Change App Restrictions settings in Screen Time.
7. To lock certain settings, click Preference Restrictions, then turn options on or off. See Change Preference Restrictions settings in Screen Time.

All this and more is available here: Set up content and privacy restrictions in Screen Time on Mac - Apple Support

We hope this helps out.

Take care!

Your advice to solve the limitations of clearing the history of web searches worked. Thank you. The only complication was your references were dissimilar to my "older" machine. For example your refer to "System Settings", whereas my machine says "System Preferences". "Screen Time", I found by using Spotlight search.

In any event, I was able to sort through that.
