IMAC 10.15.7 data back to LaCie

Thank you for all the time and support. I have a IMAC with 10.15.7 and bought a LaCie drive to back up my info. to transfer to new computer. The LaCie backs up data but not my files or documents that need to transfer. Questions: Is it set up improperly to back up personal data only? When I look for documents it is not readable. The "computer data/diagnostics" is useless for transfer due to age, 2013, except only to assist in document transfer? Thank You so very much.

Did you back up the iMac with Time Machine, or some other method? If you backed it up with Time Machine and left all the defaults intact it should have backed up everything to your LaCie external drive.
