LaCrie External Drive Toolkit vs. Mac Time Machine

Okay, I'm new to using Mac computers, so, please, no laughing at me here. Well, you can, just don't let me see it. : ) Anyway, I just bought an iMac and a LaCrie external drive to back up my files. I did install the Toolkit that comes with the LaCrie drive (doing that before coming across the thread in here), which, upon initial setup, mirrored everything under my iMac Users folder. After the initial mirroring, I tested it out by creating a new folder on the iMac and the Toolkit immediately created a mirror of it. All that said, here's my question: Should I still use the iMac's Time Machine to back up whatever other 'stuff' that needs backing up? For instance, whatever earlier versions of the IOS that are archived after each IOS update? Or should all that stuff remain on the iMac's internal drive? All advice would be greatly appreciated, even if the best advice comes down to, "nuke your LaCrie Toolkit and JUST use the Time Machine for everything." Thanks in advance. - John -

Hi John!

First, welcome to Mac! 👋 I'm sure you'll love the switch!

I wouldn't use the LaCie mirror software. While I like LaCie products, I don't like to use any other backup software than Time Machine. Time Machine backs up your entire computer, and makes restoring files extremely easy: Restore items backed up with Time Machine on Mac - Apple Support. You can even easily restore your entire Mac: Restore your Mac from a backup - Apple Support.

So, I would recommend you erase your LaCie disk, and start your backups with Apple Time Machine. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Disk Utility (Finder > Go > Utilities)
  2. In Disk Utility, select "View" > "Show All Devices". Select the the name of the LaCie external drive that is at the top of the hierarchy. Its name will end in "Media".
  3. Click Erase, and make sure the information matches:
    1. Format: APFS
    2. Scheme: GUID
  4. Click erase, and Back up your Mac with Time Machine - Apple Support.

You can then delete the LaCie software.

Jack

- thank you so much!  I will definitely do what you suggest. I’m really

looking forward to using the iMac, Logic Pro X in particular. 😎 And since you seem so knowledgeable, a follow up question

if you don’t mind: Should I store my Logic Pro project files on the Mac’s

internal drive (2TB capacity) or save them to an external drive? (I do plan on

putting the Logic Pro Library & Sound files on a second external drive,

which is suggested by all I’ve read.) This second drive is an OWC solid state

with 2TB capacity. That said, I’m wondering if saving the Logic Pro project

files on that drive (along with the Library files) would be preferable to

saving the projects on the internal drive. And just to clarify, I’m talking

about my ‘active’ project files (those that I will be working with). In other

words, the LaCrie drive (4TB, HDD) will ONLY be used to backup/archive the project

files, as well as all the other stuff that will be backed up. Make sense?

(Sorry, don’t mean to sound so oblivious here. Just trying to maximize my set

up starting at ground zero so I don’t have to rearrange stuff later).

Again, thanks in advance for your valuable input! -

Jack - Sorry, another follow-up question. This one refers to your response to my original question (as opposed to the 'novel' I wrote in my replay to it about the Logic Pro scenario thing) when it comes to erasing the LaCrie and using it with Time Machine. Anyway, in the steps you provided you said that, after selecting the Erase option, I should choose the APFS format and the GUID scheme. Unfortunately, I'm a bit confused because when the pop-up window appears it that the format is ExFAT. I'm assuming this is the format currently associated with the LaCrie. Therefore, I want to make sure that you DO want me to select the APFS before I do the erasing, correct? In other words, I'm not sure why it matters whether I just leave it at ExFAT as opposed to selecting the APFS since I'm going to be erasing the disk anyway. Still, I don't want my (potentially bad) assumptions to hose things up. Also, the GUID scheme thing: At this point that info doesn't show up on the pop-up window. All that said, I'm now wondering that the APFS and GUID selections are part of the 'Mount' procedure, which I'm (once again) assuming will/should take place after the erasure. Anyway, don't want to come across (to quote Jethro Tull) as being thick as a brick. Then again, when it comes to communicating with the iMac, I guess that it's obvious I am. Sorry.
