iMovie not exporting after update to Sonoma

Hi,

Sometimes glitches occur with an upgrade to a new operating system.

Try booting up in Safe Mode and, after everything loads, immediately shut down and reboot in normal mode. That will clear out any conflicts. Then see if iMovie works properly.

Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support

If still no luck, try deleting/resetting preferences by opening iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and select to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new empty library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. Possibly you may need to reboot to set the changes.  Deleting preferences is a safe procedure that will not cause data loss or disruption to your project.

Just upgraded to 14.1.1 - iMovie STILL will not export.

Have tweeted at Apple as well.

This is so frustrating (and, professionally, embarrassing).

As I mentioned, might be a glitch from the new OS upgrade.

In re-reading your initial post, it is correct that iMovie exports properly when opened in

a new user account? If so, then there is some conflict on your main user account that is

causing the problem. You need to track down the problem -- maybe some new software that

you recently purchased.

Open iMovie in your Mac's Guest account and see if you can export from there.

Several posters on this forum have complained of export issues with Sonoma. It appears to be a confirmed glitch with Sonoma that Apple will need to address.

I spent hours on the phone and via chat with Apple support for the same issue.

No solution found !!! Frustrating !!!

it’s the last time I will update my iMac with their untested os.

glad I have a Time Capsule and I will return to the previous ios.

how can Apple be so irresponsive and lacking basic testing of their «upgrades » ?

Until Apple fixes this, try playing your project on the preview screen at full screen, and use the Command-Shift-5 feature to make a screen recording of the preview screen as it plays the movie. Use your ear buds in the mic jack to get better sound while recording.

Same issue. iMovie no longer exports to ANYTHING. I've tried every possible way to export or share. Nothing works. And none of what has been suggested in this forum works. And I am on deadline for work to get this video up ASAP. This needs to be fixed NOW NOW NOW.

Same issue with no/little support from Apple. Spent hours chatting ans talking to them ... no solution !!!

I then erased all my discs, installed Ventura and retored all my data from Time Machine backups.

Seems to be the only way to go until Apple finally (hopefully) works on the issue and comes with a fix.

Avoid installing Sonoma until several months is my recommendation to all users ...

I restored my iMac to its factory OS version (shift-option-command-R), then installed Ventura 13.6.1, then used a backup from TimeMachine (before Sonoma) and guess what ... everything works fine in iMovie !! This demonstrates that Sonoma and iMovie are not compatible for exporting movie files. Something that Apple certainly knows but do nothing or too little about it.

I'm having the same issue - I can edit a video, but when I go to export, none of the export options do anything - 2015 MacBook pro on Sonoma

Same thing here! I did all of those options, talked for hours with an Apple specialist, and nothing has worked. I cannot export any projects into files. Apple needs to fix this Sonoma glitch asap!

Nothing what Apple suggested ever worked !!! I am now returning my iMac to macOS Catalina and I will see if it works better afterwards. Very frustrating from a known company like Apple :-(
