Factory Reset Without iCloud password

My father recently passed away and had just bought a new MacBook laptop, M1 2020, so Apple silicon. I have the laptop's password and was able to transfer some precious photos, but there is nothing remaining on it that I need. I want to factory reset the laptop so I can give it to my child, but without the iCloud password, I am finding this difficult. Is there a workaround path?

Hi there,

I am sorry to hear about the passing of your father. My condolences.

Unless your father added you or someone you know as a Legacy Contact on their Apple ID, it will not be possible to remove the Activation Lock from his Mac. You can check if you were added as one of his Legacy Contacts by doing the following:

On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

  1. Go to Settings, then tap your name.
  2. Tap Password & Security > Legacy Contact.
  3. If you see your father's name, you're one of his Legacy Contacts. Tap his name to see more options, including viewing the access key or starting an access request.

On your Mac:

  1. Choose Apple menu  > System Settings (or System Preferences), then click your name (or Apple ID).
  2. Click Password & Security.
  3. Click Manage next to Legacy Contact settings.
  4. If you see your father's name, you're one of his Legacy Contacts. Click Details next to his name to see more options, including viewing the access key or starting an access request.

If you don't see an access key, you were not added as a Legacy Contact. You can learn more about Legacy Contacts here: Request access to an Apple account as a Legacy Contact - Apple Support

You should add his account info your account. All would sync. It would be most wide to reset this to factory settings, and then set this up as a child's device: Set Up Screen Time for a Child on Mac - Apple Support

Managing a Deceased Family Member's Device:

Transfer Ownership:

  1. Transfer ownership of your husbands Apple Account to your account.* If his device were synced with iCloud, then you may be able to get it from is iCloud Drive, rather than directly from a device.
  2. Contact Apple Support, seeing if you can get the info.
