How do I prevent my Apple Watch from connecting to my Airpods when I am using the Airpods with my iPhone?

When I am out exercising, my Apple Watch will try to connect to my Airpods even if I am using them to listen to music, podcasts, etc. When they do, one of two things happens, both of them bad:

  1. Sometimes the connection just works to silence notifications on the watch, so I don't hear the notifications on the watch OR through my Airpods.
  2. Sometimes the notifications will come through on the Airpods, which will either stop the program I'm listening to on the iPhone or disconnect my iPhone from my Airpods entirely, leaving the music etc. playing through the iPhone speaker.

I have tried disconnecting the Airpods from the Watch via the Watch's settings, but after a few minutes the Watch just reconnects.

BTW, I am aware of the fix that has been proposed on this forum several times, namely, Go to iPhone Settings > Bluetooth, tap next to the name of your AirPods, tap Connect to This iPhone, then tap When Last Connected to This iPhone. This works to prevent the iPhone from reconnecting to the Airpods if the Airpods connect to something else, but appears to have no effect on the Watch's ability to connect--and there is no equivalent setting on the Watch's settings app or the Watch app on the iPhone that I can find.

I would be more than happy to keep the Watch from EVER connecting to the Airpods, but if you tell the Watch to "forget this device" it warns that it will also make your iPhone forget the Airpods too.

I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max and an Apple Watch Ultra. Both are running the latest OS (17.0.1 and 10.0.1, respectively).

Hello kgrierson,

Let's use the steps below to update your iPhone and Apple Watch to the latest iOS 17.0.2 and watchOS 10.0.2:

Get ready to update

Next, check these things:
1. Make sure that your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS.
2. Make sure that your Apple Watch is at least 50 percent charged.
3. Make sure that your iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi.

Keep your iPhone near your Apple Watch throughout the update. It could take from several minutes to an hour for the update to complete, so you might want to update overnight or wait until you have time.

Update your Apple Watch using your iPhone
You can wait until Apple Watch notifies you when a new update is available. Tap Update Tonight in the notification, then go to your iPhone to confirm that you want to update overnight. At the end of the day, leave your Apple Watch and iPhone charging overnight so the update can complete.

Or you can update your Apple Watch with your iPhone manually:
1. On your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app, then tap the My Watch tab.
2. Tap General > Software Update.
iPhone General Settings screen showing Software Update
3. Download the update. If asked for your iPhone passcode or Apple Watch passcode, enter it.
4. Wait for the progress wheel to appear on your Apple Watch. It could take from several minutes to an hour for the update to complete.

Leave your Apple Watch on its charger while the update completes. Don't restart your iPhone or Apple Watch, and don't quit the Apple Watch app. When the update completes, your Apple Watch restarts on its own.

Updating and restarting can sometimes help address odd behaviors.

Should that still persist, you'll want to reach out to Apple Support: Apple Support They'll be in the best position to look into this further.

Take care.

While I get that you're trying to be helpful, this response boils down to "call customer support," which I have done. And they don't appear to have an answer either, which is annoying, to put it mildly. I would be quite happy to have my watch NEVER connect to my headphones, but for all the UI tweaks we've had in the WatchOS, that doesn't appear to be possible.
