Lack of Text Notifications With iOS 17 'Upgrade'

My iPhone 12 Pro no longer notifies me (sound OR vibration) when any contact to which I've previously assigned a custom text tone sends a text message to me. Everything worked fine before the iOS 17 update. They don't work after the update. I literally changed nothing. I can see that they are listed under "Text Tone" in the contact, but they don't work. When I tried to reassociate them with the contacts, I can't even find them in the list of choices. From my understanding, it's because the custom tones - WHICH I PAID APPLE FOR - have been recategorized by Apple, after my update to iOS 17. BS move, Apple. Fine - I'll assign new 'stock' sounds from what Apple thinks I should use. I've reassigned the "Text Tone" in the contacts but I still get NO notification - sound OR vibration. From cruising the internet and reading, I see that this is not uncommon after the iOS 17 update. It's maddening. How do I fix this so I actually get notified when a contact sends a text message to me?!

(no, I don't have an Apple watch --- yes, I've checked my settings/mute options/notification options/etc.)
