apple watch unable to check for software update

I have an iPhone X so I cannot update it to iOS 17. It seems I cannot update my iwatch to watch OS 10 since my iPhone is not updated to the latest iOS. Is this right?

that is correct, and if you used another iphone to update the watch it would never be able to work with your iphoneX phone again.
