Blue dot remains after I open message

Ever since installing iOS 16 (which introduced being able to mark a message as unread), the blue “new message” dot will sometimes remain next to a text even after I open it. I’ll get a new message, open/read it, go back to my list of conversations and the blue dot will still be there suggesting I have an unread message even though I don't. Once I tap on the message a 2nd time, the blue dot finally disappears for good. I've contacted Apple Support various times over the last few weeks and none of their suggestions have worked. I am currently up to date with iOS 17 and the issue is still occuring.

Same thing is happening with me. Today I had a situation where I sent an iMessage but the line at the top indicating the message was in transit never finished. I tried deleting the message and I’ve even deleted the conversation. I’ve gone into the filters and it shows that I have two unread messages from my partner. The blue dot steel persist next to my partners name even though they’re on no messages on the thread

Hey there tylerfromcamp,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

If you're still seeing an unread messages badge after opening it, make sure you don't have any messages from unknown senders as well by taking these steps:

Tap Filters in the top-left corner of the conversation list, then tap Unknown Senders.
