iPhone 11 Pro Max Broken After Overnight Automatic IOS 17 Update

I woke up to my phone not turning on and flashing the apple logo over and over again. I tried to force restart using the volume up down and power button but that did not work either.

I went to the Genius Bar at my local apple store and after telling them about my iPhone they told me it was likely due to my phone not having enough storage as I do know my phone was almost at max capacity. They hooked my phone up to their computer and tried updating the IOS there. That didn’t work so we proceeded to try the only solution left which was to restore it. Surprisingly, my phone couldn’t even be restored either, and the error code “4013” was the cause. The worker told me that most likely the logic board in the phone was fried from trying to update the phone given that there was not enough storage. So my phone was basically done for.

I’m just taken aback because this should be completely Apple’s fault in terms of their hardware and software engineering. Why was my phone trying to update its IOS when it didn’t have enough storage? And why did Apple’s solutions on updating and restoring the phone completely not work but also put my phone in a permanent coma?

Is there anything within my consumer rights to receive a replacement or some sort of solution?

Sorry to hear about this! I can’t answer your question, but I can tell you that my 16” MacBook Pro M1 Max died last week after trying to install MacOS Sonoma (I need to turn off auto update in the future!). It would not boot at all and after the Apple logo went to the Exclamation mark screen saying it needed to be restored. Apple Support said it needed a DFU ‘Revive and Restore’ so I took it to the Apple Store the next day. The tech was great and managed to revive it so I could get my important data (I had a Time Machine backup from two weeks ago but not my latest work), but after trying to downgrade to macOS Monterey again it completely died. The Logic board failed and I have to wait 1 week for a replacement. Luckily it is under AppleCare+ otherwise I would have to pay £700 GBP. The Apple tech was very helpful and said he has seen this many times with the macOS Sonoma on M1 / M2 Macs. The takeaway for me is to backup to Time Machine everyday and turn off automatic updates, knowing that any update can kill my new MacBook - or your Apple device - so please do a full backup before installing ANY update.
