Magic keyboard stays connected but won't type any characters

Today I encounted a problem with my Magic Keyboard three times. It remains connected via bluetooth and the battery is charged, but it won't type any characters into any apps. The problem persists if I turn the keyboard off and on again. The problem is resolved by a reboot, but it happened twice again shortly after reboot. Right before the issue happens, characters are delivered slowly and dropped when typing.


I don't have any apps running now except Chrome and Sublime text. The keyboard has never been connected to another Mac. The wireless trackpad works fine. It's the newer keyboard with black keys, number pad and touch ID.


Any ideas before I utilise my AppleCare?


Computer: Mac Studio M1 2022

It sounds like you've done some great troubleshooting so far, which is awesome. Some other good steps you can take would include isolating the issue, which can help determine the root cause of any given issue which makes resolving it a little more simple once you can pinpoint the cause. In this case, you could test this keyboard with a different compatible device, to see if it works as expected on the other device. For example, if you have an iPhone you could test it by following the steps here: Pair Magic Keyboard with iPhone - Apple Support


Another good isolating step would be testing an alternate keyboard with your Mac, to see if any keyboard is able to pair up and work as expected with your Mac. This would again help pinpoint exactly what the root cause of the issue is. You can test with any compatible Bluetooth keyboard: Connect a Bluetooth device with your Mac - Apple Support or a wired USB keyboard.
