My Macbook battery is dead and it will not charge at all when I plug it in. I want to recycle the MacBook but there is no way to erase the data. What should I do to protect myself and my linked data?

That was my first decision too... but the HD is a physical part of the motherboard and cannot be removed.
It's early 2015. Already tried the battery replacement and charger swap and it still won't charge. The guy said it is probably a problem with the motherboard.
As for Apple's solution, it says nothing about prepping a laptop that won't turn on at all, so the preparation steps are impossible to do. I was just wondering if there is anything else short of hitting it with a sledgehammer to prevent any possibility data theft.

since it won't boot, I would opt to open it up and physically remove the hard drive.
you can go to OWC’s website and look for the HDD replacement videos to see how to open the case and remove the HDD for your particular Mac.
well, since you are going to recycle it, what does it matter if you totally DESTROY the logic board to remove the drive?
What year Mac? battery replacements are not that expensive and the Mac might be salvageable.
As to what to do, the article you reference is Apple's definitive solution.
