Mail not opening because Home folder is full

When trying to open Mail app I get a Mail Message Import: Mail needs to import your messages....You won't be able to use Mail until the import is finished.

I click "Continue" and process starts to import 5412 messages. It gets to importing well over 5000 then gives an error message The import failed: An error occurred during the import. Make sure you have available space in your home folder and try again.

So, how do I do this? Where exactly am I trying to make space? If I go to Finder and go to the Home page, there are a number of folders. Do I just reduce the size of what is in the folders? Or do I work on a particular folder?

Help please!!
