Hey tbirdvet,
What type of email account is this happening with? Are you using an @iCloud.com account, or another email account in the Mail app?
How many email accounts do you have set up in Mail?
We ask as the issue could be account specific. You can find more info on checking which email accounts are set up here: Change settings in Mail on Mac - Apple Support
Thanks!
Hey there tbirdvet,
With the junk mail folder not behaving as intended, try resetting the junk mail filter first, then change the settings as you prefer once more. Test to see if that helps.
The steps below will show you how:
Resetting the junk mail filter to its original state removes what Mail learned from you whenever you marked emails as junk or not junk.
1. In the Mail appon your Mac, choose Mail > Settings, then click Junk Mail.
2. Click Reset.
Continue with adjusting the settings as you'd like using the link below as a guide:

Hi tbirdvet,
You may want to check out any settings for rules you've set up in macOS Mail to see if there could be one that's conflicting with the junk mail setting: Use rules to manage emails you receive in Mail on Mac - Apple Support
"1) In the Mail app on your Mac, choose Mail > Settings, then click Rules.
To review an example of a rule, select a provided rule, then click Edit. To close the rule, click Cancel.
2) Click Add Rule, then type a name for the rule.
3) Indicate whether any or all of the conditions must be true for the rule to be applied to a message.
4) Specify the conditions.
To use different header fields in conditions, choose “Edit header list” from the bottom of the first pop-up menu. To add your own header, click the Add button in the Message Headers window.
5) Choose actions to perform on messages that meet the conditions. To specify multiple actions, click the Add button .
You can use AppleScript scripts as rule actions.
6) When you’re done, click OK, then decide to apply rules to existing messages already in mailboxes or to new messages.
You can apply rules to existing messages later by choosing Message > Apply Rules."
If you don't find any rules set up that could be conflicting, we recommend contacting us directly next so we can further look into the issue. This link will help: Get Support
Take care.
Tried that but no impact. However, I clicked on the junk folder (Rt. click) and picked synchronize. Now I can get the junk folder to empty when mail quits but using another setting like delete after one day still does not work.
Long Shot here
Perhaps something in Yahoo Mail Web Portal needs to be adjusted to match your Mail Application setting ?
In Theory, the setting in Mail should communicate up-stream to Yahoo but . . . maybe the two are miscommunication with each other ?
One account (IMAP Yahoo) in the mail app. Always worked fine until recently.
I know all about rules. I have been using Macs for many years. That is not the issue. I will run some other test and report back. thanks
Thanks but already checked that and I see nothing at the server end.
