I just noticed for the first time that my messages were being uploaded to the cloud. I have the 13 pro max. I’ve never seen this before. I would prefer to select which ones get uploaded or not. I don’t want to have to buy more iCloud space. How can I change this?

You don't its all or nothing. Set up iCloud for Messages on all your devices - Apple Support
