Hello,
I think that you are referring to the Home screen indicator dots.
They are actually quite useful. The number of dots indicate the number of Home screens on your phone. The highlighted dot shows the currently active Home screen.
For example, if you have 3 dots and the second one is highlighted, it tells you that you have 3 Home screens and that the second one is the active screen. I use them all of the time.
