Random folders in my Mac HD

I'm not sure when these appeared but there are now random folders that have appeared when I click into my Mac HD from the desktop (please see photo). Most are greyed out and I'm not sure what they are for. Before I just had the usual list of Applications, Library, System, and Users. Is this normal for macOS and if it is, is there a way to hide them?

Those are protected files by the Operating system. If you don't want to see them, while you have Finder open, Press Command + Shift + Period, to toggle them on or off.
