How stop auto play of episodes when watching a series in a web browser?

There have been answers that point to settings / accessibility in the app. But there is no such setting in the browser version.

I have subscriptions to several other streaming services, all of which I access and watch using a web browser, and have done for many years. The other services provide auo-play that can be easily disabled through the always on-screen setting icon, or more inconveniently by exiting the current series and accessing the settings from the home screen. But at least it can be done in *every other* online streaming service. Why is apple tv+ so backwards and behind-the-curve in this respect?

(I will shortly be deciding whether or not to continue my subscription).
