macbook air stuck on estimating time remaining

My macbook air suddenly started an update about 7 hours ago, and after turning off, it has been stuck on the ‘estimating time remaining’ screen for the last 7 hours. Any ideas of what I can do to regain access to my laptop

Halt the process by pressing and holding the power button until the screen goes totally black ... about 10 seconds or so.

Then restart normally. You might consider turning off auto updates. Set download only and then you control when the update takes place. Your choice.
