Message app opens to compose new message

Every time I open my Message app on my iPhone 12 Pro running iOS 16.5.1c it goes into Compose a new message. I have to hit cancel to see the list of my text messages.

the other person that posted this issue a while was told to close the app and reboot the phone. I did both of those things. I also pushed the vol up, vol down and then held the power button until the Apple logo reappeared. Message app still opens and wants me to compose a new message.

this is irritating - how do I stop the Message app from opening into composing a new message?

When the Composing screen appears don’t hit Cancel, just close it by swiping up. Try opening Messages again. It should open to the Conversation screen.

Hi randynchicago,

We appreciate you reaching out to us.

We’d like to gather additional details that may help us be in a better position to assist you.

  1. How are you launching the Messages app? For example, are you using Siri? Are you using a widget or a shortcut?
  2. Also, do you have a different Apple device that is signed in to the same Apple ID? If yes, are you experiencing a similar issue with your other device? These details can help us in isolating the issue.

In the meantime, please check if the same behavior happens if you launch the Messages app through the App Library.
