On my iPhone 16.5 when I have a text message about ready to send and a new message comes and I click to see it, when returning to complete the text message not yet sent it is no where to be found.
This situation has happened to me a few times and it is frustrating - of course it has to be when I have a long message too!!!
Is there any way I can get that unfinished and unsent message back?

Unfortunately, there is no way to recover unsent messages that are left in the text box. If you do not see that message in the text box, when you return to it, then it is lost and is not saved in memory of the iPhone.

Do your Part: You can recommend this to Apple. Apple won't get back to you directly, but the more feedback they receive on this, the more they will know what is their customers prefer, and what features to include in iOS versions to come.
I’m in the middle of composing a text and my phone rings. I answer the call and when I go back to the text I was composing it is gone. How do I get it back??? I don’t understand why moving to another application on my iPhone makes a text message go away
