IOS IPad keyboard disappears

when I type a message in Mail, if I stop and pull up another app, the keyboard disappears. I have to exit mail, open again, and then retrieve the draft. My IOS is up to date, I have restarted the device, and none of this helps. There was a post about this in January of this year but there’s no resolution. Your feedback is most welcome.
