2015 MacBook Pro DOA

What’s wrong here? My 2015 Intel MacBook Pro won’t start up, as if the battery is dead. However, the green light on the charging cable seems to indicate that the battery is fully charged. I tried a hard reboot, and resetting the SMC, but neither worked. And now I’m stumped.

Obviously it’s time to replace this machine with a new MacBook, but I would like to understand what’s happening with this old one. Any insights would be appreciated.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.15

It is highly likely that the internal display cable is broken or loose (it’s tucked under the hinge, so daily use can wear it). You can test it by connecting to another monitor or your TV.

Then, if there is still no display, it is possible that the motherboard is faulty.

However, if you have or can make other USB bootable media, even it is Windows or Linux, you can try to boot it with your Mbp (without installing anything) to see how it goes.

Other methods to test are normal Apple tools, including booting in secure mode, single user mode, Recovery/+Apple Diagnostics. Or reinstall if the Mbp has been properly backed up via Time Machine or CCC.

When performing the SMC Reset, pay attention to the Magsafe LED....does it go dark for a second, then go green and/or amber? If not, then there is a hardware issue of some sort.

The battery may be the cause of the problem. If the battery was allowed to become completely discharged, then it can prevent the laptop from powering on or even charging. You can try disconnecting the battery, then connect the power adapter to see if the laptop will power on. If it does power on, then reconnect the battery while the laptop is still powered on. Allow the battery to charge to at least 10%+ before powering off the laptop or disconnecting the charger or you will permanently damage the battery. You need to be careful not to allow any metal or conductive item or surface touch any of the internals while doing this procedure. The fan will run at high speed while the battery is disconnected (even after reconnecting it until after a reboot).
