MacBook not taking a charge and won’t start
Just before it died altogether I saw it wasn’t taking a charge and that the battery was indicated to be normal

Here are two Apple articles for troubleshooting charging issues, depending on your laptop both articles may apply while other models only one of the two articles may apply.
If your USB-C power adapter isn't charging your Mac laptop - Apple Support
If your MagSafe cable or power adapter isn't working - Apple Support
Edit: I'm not sure if the USB-C charging article mentions this, but make sure to connect the USB-C charging cable directly to the laptop. Try using every port available, but especially one on the other side of the laptop if possible.
Also, for either type of charger, make sure to disconnect all other external devices in case one of them is causing a problem.
